In the Recent past, the people of Texas have entrusted the republicans the power to legislate on their behalf. The history of political parties was linked to federalists and antifederalists during the 18th, 19th and 20th century. Since its Independence in 1776, the people of the United States of America have been linked to either the Republican Party or the Democratic Party. Political parties have developed slowly in Texas as compared to other states partly because they were colonized by Mexico. After Texas became a member of the United States, there was an introduction of the Democratic Party in 1845. However, after the civil war, the Republican Party took control of the state from 1867 to 1874. A larger part of the 19th century was under the control of the democrats as they had a massive influence on its citizens. William Earl (2011). Similarly, intwentieth century, the democrats had overwhelming power of Texas irrespective of the challenges from other political parties. However, in the 1960s, the Republican Party began to gain strength and support from some of the citizens. For the first time, the Republicans were given state offices.
The history of political parties can be divided into five eras. In 1836 to 1845, there was no existing political parties since the democratic and other parties were still new in the nation. Secondly, between 1845 and 1867, the democrats under the leadership of Stefan Haag and Gary Keith dominated the political scene because it was established early before the rest of the parties. After the civil war, the republicans led by the Edmund Jackson Davis took for 8 years from 1867 to 1874. From 1874 onwards, the Democrats took over led by Richard Coke who remained in office until 1979. Joseph (2012) Since George W Bush came in power under the Republican Party, the republicans took control of Texas. In 2012 for example the senators under the Republican Party were 19 out of the possible 31.
Despite this competition from the Republicans and other smaller political parties, the Democrats had the largest share of loyal voters for the larger part of the Texas History. However, there is a change for the past 40 years.
